Contacting 999 Using Relay UK
Emergency SMS is a free service that allows you to use SMS (text messaging) to contact any of the UK 999 services (police, ambulance, fire & rescue or coastguard).
It is available for anyone who finds making a voice call difficult, has communication difficulties, or is deaf and includes members of the autistic community or individuals who might need to contact emergency services discretely.
To use the service, you need to pre-register your phone on the website. Please see more here.
You may also want to use the “what3words” service which precisely identifies locations. If you are a walker or drive on country lanes frequently or if you are involved in an accident in a strange location, using the What3words app means that the emergency services can pinpoint where you are. Visit the what3words website for information.
Neighbourhood Matters
The Neighbourhood Matters messaging system enables residents, businesses and community groups to keep in touch with local policing teams. You can receive updates on crimes, latest information on on-going incidents and learn more about what we’re doing in your community.
You’re invited to sign up and become a registered recipient of messages of information, crime alerts or witness appeals local to the area in which you live or work by email, text or telephone.
You will have to register an email address and then confirm your registration and give some details about where you live, and which updates you want to receive. The service is free and full instructions are on the registration webpages.
Action Fraud
Action Fraud provides a very useful service alerting subscribers to the latest scams and frauds doing the rounds. These are often very sophisticated and are evolving all the time, so it is important to keep abreast of the latest developments.
Action Fraud is produced by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau which is run by the City of London Police as a national service. You can sign up to receive the alerts here.
Advice on Spotting and Dealing with Common Scams
- Watch out for scam messages from addresses you don’t recognise or when the messages have spelling mistakes or aren’t in good English.
- Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond to unsolicited messages and calls that ask for your personal or financial details.
- If making a purchase from a company or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first, and ask a friend or family member for advice before completing the purchase. If you decide to go ahead with the purchase, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases.
- Always install the latest software and app updates to protect your devices from the latest threats. For information on how to update your devices, please click here.
You can report fraud and find practical advice on how to protect yourself from becoming a victim on the Action Fraud website. You are encouraged to sign up to the services and where appropriate, to pass on warnings to your friends and neighbours, especially to those who might be most vulnerable.
