Bodenham Bowling Club
Since 1982, Bodenham Bowling Club has offered an enjoyable social environment for both experienced bowlers and those new to lawn green bowls.
We see ourselves as a friendly, welcoming club that is keen to welcome new members, whether they have played before or not. We now have a qualified coach who can help newcomers and oldcomers (!) improve their knowledge and technique. If you’re new, for the first few games, just turn up with flat soled shoes and we’ll provide you with bowls to get you started.
Each Monday, from late April to the end of the outdoor season in early September, we hold informal roll-up sessions starting at 5pm. This is a particularly good opportunity for new members to come along to relax and engage.
During the season, the Club plays home and away matches against other, mostly Herefordshire based teams, either in competitions or as friendlies. In addition, members are encouraged to play in the Club’s internal competitions. Games usually run from 2.30pm until dusk – weather and greenkeeper permitting. So, there’s plenty going on!
We’re located within the secluded grounds of the Siward James at Siward James Close, Bodenham, Hereford HR1 3LS

Bodenham Ramblers
Bodenham Ramblers are a friendly walking group that draws members from all over Herefordshire. It was founded by a group of walkers in Bodenham in 1980 and continues to attract new members every year.
A bit of history:
The Club was founded in 1980 following a Bodenham Parish circular inviting residents to indicate their interests. There were 12 founder members and the Club was initially affiliated to the Ramblers’ Association. However, membership of the Association was not renewed in 1982. This was because many members were not happy with the more militant attitude that was being adopted by the Ramblers Association as it was seen to conflict with our own policy of cooperation with landowners. This policy remains current and individual members are free to take out personal membership of the Ramblers’ Association if they wish.
Many of the footpaths and stiles in the 7 parishes from Munstone to Pencombe owe their reinstatement and continued existence to the Bodenham Ramblers Working Party (or Geriatric Playgroup) which was in operation between 1989 and 2000. During this period Bodenham Ramblers restored some 35 miles of rights of way, erected 75 signposts, built 142 stiles, 13 footbridges and installed 11 kissing gates.
Since then, the purpose of the Club, to ramble, has continued apace, attracting more and more walkers until non-resident members now outnumber those living in Bodenham. We currently have around 35 walking members and 12 social members.
We offer a programme of interesting, circular walks taken at a steady, relaxed pace in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside and sometimes venturing into neighbouring counties. With no rushing from A to B, every opportunity is allowed to discover and appreciate some wonderful scenery and locations. The number on a walk is usually between 10 and 20. The coffee stop is an important feature in all our walks and, in the Summer, walk leaders like to find a good spot to have a picnic lunch. Winter walks are followed by a pub lunch, whenever feasible.
The walks take place every 10 or 11 days on alternate Sundays and Wednesdays, starting at 10 am. Currently they tend to be just 4 or 5 miles long with the usual ups and downs. For walkers who can manage stiles, they are generally fairly easy. To date, in May each year, the Club has usually organised 3-4 day walking holidays in locations ranging from St David’s, Wales, North and South Devon, Cornwall, Llandudno, West Sussex & Tenby for members and friends. We are currently reviewing our future holiday plans.
Our AGM is held in the Parish Hall in early Spring each year. The meeting is followed by an opportunity to enjoy refreshments and review the year’s activities with fellow members: often we take a look at some of the photographs taken during the past 12 months, reminding us of the many delightful places we’ve walked and raising a few friendly smiles. Consequently the evening has become a pleasant annual social gathering usually attended by 40-50 members.
Social membership at a reduced subscription was introduced to accommodate members who were no longer able to walk, but wished to keep in contact with club members and their activities. At present full membership is priced at £5 per annum and social membership at £1.
Given that we often walk through mixed farmland with stiles, chickens, cows, sheep, etc, dogs are not permitted.
We welcome all walkers and currently are actively seeking more potential walk leaders to plan and lead our circular walks, using the many public rights of way crisscrossing the county. If you would like to try one of our walks or need any further information please get in touch. We would be delighted to welcome new walkers. Come on your own or with a friend to enjoy walking (and talking) in beautiful, Herefordshire countryside.
