Bodenham Flood Protection Group

Welcome to the Bodenham Flood Protection Group (BFPG) pages.

Originally formed in 2008, the Bodenham Flood Protection Group is a voluntary, community group. A new Committee took over in January 2021, but the objective remains the same: to support the village in reducing the risk of flooding to property. The Group has a formal constitution which is available on request from the Secretary. The Group’s history and background can be found on the Archive page.

Contacts. The contact details of the BFPG Committee, Area Representatives and Sandbag Cage key holders can be found listed under the BFPG Contacts section.

Meetings. The Group’s year runs from 1st April to 31st March. The Committee holds bi-monthly meetings and bi-annual meetings with the wider, active teams; the AGM is open to all members.

Social Events. Social events and activities help to raise the Group’s profile as well as funds for equipment and running costs. These would normally be spread throughout the year and have typically events such as Treasure Trails, Coffee Morning/Cake Sales, Summer Fete and Quiz Nights. These social events are open to all and the details will be found in the Calendar Events section.

Working Parties. The Group’s most important function, which is to reduce the risk of flooding, is normally managed via regular working party sessions; these sessions can include clearing drains and watercourses or filling and stockpiling sandbags. These sessions are normally held on alternate Saturday mornings, between April and September although ad hoc work will be done outside these times as necessary. The work is carried out entirely by volunteers from the local community, working in teams. The Group has its own public liability insurance policy. Working Party dates will be posted under Calendar Events.

Sandbags. Sandbags are often used as a first line of defence against flooding and they are available free to Bodenham residents on request. The process is to identify how many are required and contact your Area Rep or Cage Keyholder, see Contacts section. Please note, that if you are given sandbags, it is your responsibility to keep them properly stored and keeping them dry, as they are bio-degradable and there is a cost to the community to replace.

BFPG Mailing list. The Group maintains a mailing list, through which it distributes flooding-related information, publicises meetings and other events, and circulates documents such as the agendas and minutes of its Meetings. The Group also uses social media to publicise its activities or to warn residents of current flood issues which may cause local problems. This is currently promoted via the Bodenham Nextdoor pages and the Bodenham Watch Facebook page.

Advice Hub. In the Advice Hub section, you can find more useful information on flooding in general, flood risk and other links on where to get further help.

If you would like to become a member, for information, help with the Working Parties, or with any other aspect of the Group’s activities, such as fund-raising, your contribution will be most welcome. For this, or to be included on the mailing list, please contact the Group’s Secretary, Debby House, on 01568-797305 or by e-mail.
